Case Study:
Modern Construction with Old School Thinking

Project Overview

Dabinett led a multidisciplinary team which provided expert advice which led to significant cost and time savings.

A redevelopment to form one of the largest recycling centres in the UK.  The client needed detailed surveys to establish what building defects existing, complete accurate plans of the existing buildings and included for structual testing.

The buildings ranged from vast warehouses for material storage, manufacturing functions and waste water treatment.

The building defect inspection found structural failure through excessive loads, impact damage, cut edge corrosion, chemical attack of concrete and many others.

Project Requirement

The main site extended to approximately 35 acreas, with a variety of buildings which were to either be demolished or re-used and adapted.

Over the course of July and August 2023 and May 2024 Dabinett inspected buildings that were earmarked for adaption and extension.

The client needed to know the strucutral condition, to establish if there were any building defects that required remediation.  The primary building was approximately 200m in length and 40m wide and was a concrete framed structure.

In addition to the structural survey invasive aand non-invasive tests were commissioned to establish the strength of columns, beams and floor slabs.  Including for the testing of reinforcement (rebar) with the concrete elements.

A geomatic surveys were carried out, producing 3D models of the buildings.  These were used to finalise designs for building extensions and for M&E and manufacturing plant.

Project Outcome

The project was large in scale with many meetings with the engineering teams based in Turkey and on site.

Reports were completed identifying each structural element and the condition, full measured surveys and reports on the structural strength of concrete columns, beams and rebars.

There were times when the juxtaposition of cutting edge technology was compared to ‘old school’ surveying.  The use of a measuring tape and calipers eventually saw the adjustment of buildling plans which had been the focus of months of work across the world.
